Which determines the direction a PWC will travel

Personal watercraft that is design for the personal use. Its length is about 16 feet and has plenty of rooms for the passengers. You should read the instructions operating it and important questions that are raise discus in this article. 


PWC stand for personal watercraft. Jet ski is its brand name that is create by the Kawasaki. Sometime, people called it with its brand name. Some other brand name of it are Wave runner (Yamaha) and Sea Doo (Bombardier).

We say PWC is a watercraft is intently use for own use and we define as

  1. We use jet pump for propulsion instead of propeller in it.
  2. Its length is about less than 16 feet.
  3. A single person is operates it Ans it has many rooms for passengers. And user also sits, kneels and even stands on the craft.

  • Check your PWC in a good condition or not.

Important things when operating a PWC

  • Do not ride closely to next PWC because when you turn it sharply or it stalls, you will collide with the other PWC and even if the next ridder falls down, you will run over him.
  • Before taking turn, look behind on over both shoulders side that another vessel are too close to you or not.
  • In boating area, do not focus only on short distance distance ahead but also aware of the traffic in the boating area.
  • Always keep in mind that operating vessel or operating a PWC has same duties. 

Environment considerations

When you operating a PWC, it put some effects on the environment. These are following

  • Not operte the PWC in swallow water because aquatic vegetation and sediments are suck into water pump and destroy the PWC Ans also the environment.
  • Not operate near shore or in narrow rivers and streams because it cause the erosion and try to operate at the slow speed.
  • The fragile environment is destroy when you land the PWC near the grasses and reeds.
  • Refill the fuel on land because fuel the PWC in or near water, oil and gasoline spills are very dangerous for the aquatic life.
  • Do not use the PWC for disturbing or chasing the wildlife.

What will happen if you shut off the engine?

Engine is shut off, the effect of engine stopping it does not the PWC. PWC will carry forward for someway without the motion of engine that means it collide with any items in its way. Besides this, the user have no control over the direction of the craft.

Steering on a PWC depends on pressurized water jet that pump by the craft. The waves of water stops engine is shut down that indicates loss of your control.

What should an operator do when trying to re-board a PWC?

Begin by swimming up to the stern

You easily flip the craft by its upward side. Therefore, reboarding should never do from the sides. 

When you pull upward on the craft. So, you use the handle of seats or use the transom to balance your weight. Before moving forward on to seat, carry the knees upward onto boarding platform and attach your safety lanyard.

If a PWC capsizes, what is the best way to roll it upright again?

When PWC capsizes, it must turn only in one direction to get turned upward. On Stern, a warning sticker should always on it that show the correct direction for particular model and this type of information also found in the owner’s manual.

What determines the direction that a PWC will travel?

The steering controls determine the direction that a PWC will travel but when you have power, steering will only work on that time. Because water must pump through craft and force out under pressure  through nozzle at the back of the unit and steering also controls the nozzle direction.

The pressurized water jet is controlled by the steering control. If steering control is turn, the steering nozzle will turned in the same direction. Like when you turned steering control right, the nozzle also turn in right direction and water jet pushes the vessel’s back to the left side and the result of it the PWC turn to the right side.

The most important thing about the steering is the power that is used to maintain the control. You lose all steering control, when the engine on PWC or the jet propeller vessel is turn to idle side or shutting down of engine during the operation. But many PWC remains in same direction before the shutting down of engine or discharge of throttle. It is not a problem in which way the steering control is turn.

PWC has a breaking system that do not stop immediately and you cannot stop instantly after discharging of throttle or shutting down of engine, you need large plenty of rooms for stopping. Keep in mind that never use reverse for stopping because the user and its passengers thrown from it.

Needed for complete steering control on a personal watercraft?

As mentioned above, steering work with the power. Due to this power, water pump through PWC and forced out through the nozzle and steering also handle direction the nozzle points and direction of craft.

You have no complete control on your steering if water is not forced out through the nozzle. The essential parts of it are power and use of the throttle.

It will move forward and also determine that how fast you want to travel. It is important to note that if you discharge it, you will loss the speed but you will not stop instantly and not be capable to control the steering.

You should keep in your mind takes some time to complete halt  when you want to stop it.

But in many cases, PWC will remain in the same direction and with the steering handles, turning left or right will not make any problem. Because it is attain by the pumping water through the PWC. 

What will happen PWC lose the ability to steer properly?

PWC lose their ability to steer through the water when it loss the power control of the craft like shutting down of engine and discharge of throttle. The power and use of throttle are very important for stucking the water into craft and forced out through the nozzle.

No situation is possible when it is legal of increasing the maximum person capacity in a watercraft.
